Wednesday Exchange Highlights: Kevin Singleton

At Exchange this week, we had the pleasure of hearing from Kevin Singleton, an amazing leader in our church family. He spoke from Hebrews 6:1 about our foundational relationship with Jesus, focusing on two things: repentance, and faith in God.

Foundation is the most important part of a building. It’s not exciting to look at, but so important for the building to stay standing. That's why it's so important for us to not only hear the word, but apply it to our lives. In Matthew 6:24-26, it talks about two men building their houses on different foundations. Both men were subject to rain falling, streams rising, and wind blowing, but because the wise man built his house on the rock—Jesus—his house stayed standing. Don't just build for the impact that you can anticipate.

  1. To repent means to retreat to the highest view. When we see things from God's perspective, we change our mind and actions. Our lives should be full of peace, righteousness, and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17)
  2. Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the presence of things unseen (Hebrews 11:1)

On our way out, volunteers passed out Vision Sunday bracelets that say, "Missio Dei: The Mission of God." Our church is wearing them around the world.

Don't forget tonight is Team Night starting at 7:30pm at 155 E 22nd St. where the creative team has an awesome time together. If you're interested in anything creative you should definitely be there. Email NYCcreative@hillsong.com for more information.

WEDNESDAY EXCHANGE HIGHLIGHTS: 'OUTSIDERS'

At Exchange this week, Pastor Josh Kimes spoke a message titled, "Outsiders," and without Jesus, we're all outsiders. He read from 1 Samuel 22:1-2.

He gave us 3 things to help us on this journey we call life:

1. It's a journey of belonging. You don't belong on the outside anymore—remember that God is always with you. (Joshua 1:9)

2. It's a journey about believing. What do you believe about yourself? Believe what God says about you—belonging leads to believing. (Psalm 139:14)

3. It's a journey called becoming. What you believe will determine what you become. (Psalm 92:13)

David's 400 men went from misfits to mighty because they stayed close to the King.

Don't forget, tonight we have Team Night at 7:30 pm at 155 E 22nd St. This is an opportunity to learn more about the creative team and how you can use your gifts to help build the church.  Our Sunday services tomorrow are at 10, 12, 2, 5, 7 and 9 p.m....

The Hillsong theory of geothermal physics states that 'the temperature on the streets is in direct inverted proportion to the atmosphere and climate inside Irving Plaza'. Trust us, if you think about it enough, it kinda works. Regardless of our grasp on the laws of physics, one thing we know for sure is that it is going to be a great day in church tomorrow.

See you at Irving!

Wednesday Exchange Highlights: 'Traits of the Older Brother'

At Wednesday's Exchange, we were blessed to have Pastor Rich Wilkerson Jr. preach a message titled, "Traits of the Older Brother," reading from the parable of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15:11-31.

In case you missed it, here's a quick outline of three key traits that the older brother has: 1. He's got a party pooper attitude. You could be present, but not engaged. You can be in worship, but never worship. 2. Entitlement - "Nothing kills a church more than the spirit of entitlement. If you're too big to serve. You're too small to lead." 3. Judmental heart: How do you know what the younger brother has been doing? The judgmental heart sees the worst in people.

But the father wants the older brother to come back into the party, Pastor Rich said. We have to celebrate. He was dead but now alive. He was lost but now is found!

We're looking forward to seeing you on Sunday, where we'll be meeting at Irving Plaza (17 Irving pl) at 10, 12, 2, 5, 7 and 9 p.m. See you at church!

This week at Hillsong NYC: What is your confession?

Author:

We're coming off a big Sunday where Pastor Carl preached part two of his "This is my confession" series. "The words that come out of your mouth shapes your life." So what is YOUR confession? About your marriage? About your job? About your singleness? Let your confessions be that (1) you'll come out of your shell because you've got a story to tell, and (2) that you'll declare that it is well with your soul because the gates of hell will not prevail.

We're gearing up for a big week, and if part of your confession is to get more plugged in at Hillsong, here is how you can do it this week:

Tonight: We are having Welcome to Church Night, which is a time to get to know what Hillsong NYC is all about and meet our leadership. At Wednesday's Exchange, we heard a powerful message from Pastor Carl titled, "A Crossroad Called Communion." But that wasn't before Carl had the multi-talented Kevin Singleton break out into spontaneous song playing the keys and singing, "help them Lord, help them Lord."

The text for Pastor Carl's message is found in John 6:55-59: "For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. This is the bread which came down out of heaven; not as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live forever." These things He said in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum."

"Communion is a decision reminder. Have you embraced the 'good idea' or the 'God identity'?" Pastor Carl said, while explaining that there are a lot of good ideas but in practices are really hard. People like the idea of doing good things and going to church, but following Jesus isn't just a good idea or a middle-of-the-road decision, Pastor Carl noted. "Jesus doesn't want 'some' of you, He wants ALL of you!"

Pastor Carl then outlined what the decision means and what it looks like if you have crossed over to be a follower of Jesus:

  1. You give up the right to "GIVE SOME". Give all of what you have now and give as if you don't have later. The two curse words at Hillsong NYC are: "someday" and "almost." There is no middle ground at this church. And if you are in the middle, we still love you anyway.
  2. You give up the right ot give up. People give up when they get hit by something. But Jesus hasn't given up on you, so you can't give up on you.
  3. You do not give up on people. But you also have to remember that you're not the one saving people, Jesus is! It's all about Jesus, not you.

We're looking forward to seeing you on Sunday, where we'll be meeting at Irving Plaza (17 Irving pl) at 10, 12, 2, 5, 7 and 9 p.m. See you at church!
